Correct Preservation of Your Teak Furniture Can Help It to Last a Lifetime

Care and Maintenance Of Teak

Preservation and Staining

stool.~It really isn’t all that necessary to defend teak wood seats.~You genuinely don’t need to defend your teak shower stool.} If left in its natural state, teakwood doesn’t really require any care, and it is exclusive in that aspect. Teakwood is something that can be left outdoors all year prolonged without having to worry about it, even if the conditions of the weather are extreme. It is because of this that people really love outdoor teak furnishings.

While it’s true that teak will turn a gray color when left in the sun for long periods of time, this is biological and it doesn’t harm any of the integrity of the wood.

A lot of people like to use a teak sealant on their wood in order to help it to maintain its native honey color. It is often used to help to give the teak wood  a darker color as well. Not only will a teak sealer help to darken up your wood, but will it will also provide it with a UV protection as well as an anti-fungicide that will prevent mold and mildew from growing on it. After that teak furnishings has been cleaned, these teak sealants can be placed on any piece of furnishings whether it be new or old. These sealers aren’t the same thing as glaze. The sealant simply acts  to preserve the wood, while at the same time still allowing it to release its oils naturally. Unlike varnish this will not peel or bubble up. This is going to help to stain your wood and defend it at the same time. The darker the stain that you get, the better UV protection you are going to give your furniture, which means less applications in the future. If by chance you have inherited a piece of teak furnishings from someone that has lacquer on it, you will need to remove all of the old varnish by sanding, and then you have the choice of either staining it the color you like or leaving it biological.

Applying a preservative to your teak wood furnishings is pretty straightforward. You want to make sure that you don’t put your first coat on unless the furnishings has been sitting in the sun for a few weeks before hand. This assures that all of the wood grains are open. When you are making application, simply spray it on to the furnishings and then rub it with a rag. Your teak furnishings is going to require two applications, and make sure that you get it on all surfaces. This includes top, bottom, sides, and in between any slats that might be present. Be sure to put your piece of furniture on something that you don’t mind if it gets stained, like an old bed sheet or something. In ensuing years, you will only need to apply the stain once a year after cleaning the wood with a mild detergent and water.

This is pretty much all that you have to do in order to protect your teak furnishings. Going once in a while it wouldn’t hurt to provide your furniture with a good washing to remove any type of soiling from food and dirty hands and such. It is important that you be careful and try not to spill things like coffee, wine or other staining foods, as these items can and will penetrate the sealant and leave a stain. If you want to avoid this, you can put a teak clear coat on the  surfaces that are in danger, like tabletops as this will improve resistance to stains.

Because of the organic oils and teak, it is pretty much impervious to water. Because of these natural oils that leach out of the wood, you don’t want to put any varnish or water sealers on it. By putting polyurethane or lacquer products on it you can be assured that they will peel off and chip. Applying these to your teak furnishings can turn out to be a real nightmare in the future.

If you’re thinking of putting oil on your teak furnishings to help stain it, think again as this will only provide an avenue for mold to start growing on your furniture, rather than the wanted effect of a darker color. This again causes more work for you as you will need to wash the furniture with bleach and soap and then sand the surface.

If you enjoy spending time outdoors relaxing, then buying a piece of teak wood furniture is an excellent investment. It brings quality and class to your yard and outdoor setting. Knowing how to take care of teak furnishings is vital to protect your investment.

Now that you see what you have to do to maintain your teak furniture, it is time to look at buying something fresh. There is nothing that quite gives elegance, relaxation, and nostalgia in an open-air scene like a quality teak rocking chair.
