Caring For Your Designer Glassware

We all love our fine glassware. For some of us, it defines the dining experience at home. It can be brought out on special occasions, or even used on a constant basis. Glassware by designers such as Mats Jonasson such as makes us feel special and shows our guests that we care about their coming to dinner.

Fine glassware can break easily. When this happens it can be an awful experience, especially when we are dealing with antique glassware, or products that have been in the family for some time. This article looks at practical ways to take care of such damage.

First of all – and perhaps this is not a surprising piece of advice – don’t break it. This means looking after it when it is out and also thinking carefully about how it is cleaned.

When cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s or retailer’s recommendations, and don’t just throw it in the dishwasher. The high temperatures that are used in dishwashers and other such machines can cause fine glassware to crack So don’t take the risk when cleaning, and do your utmost to wash glassware by hand with warm water.

If you have fine glasses and for some reason they get stuck together, accept that this happens and try and find some way to gently prise them apart. Just dragging them apart will almost certainly break them. One of the best ways to do this is to place both glasses in a plastic bowl. Once you have done this head on over to the freezer to find yourself some ice cubes. These should be placed in one of the glasses, causing the glass itself to contract. You need to create some tension here so pour some warm water into the bowl, this making the other glass expand.

Then, soon enough, you should find it easy to pull them apart gently. One of the classic problems with glassware is the small chips that you can find on rims. Grab some fine sandpaper and very carefully rub away at the rough edges until they are smoothed out. This will not be too stressful as long as you take it easy when rubbing

Another common problem with glassware is the smell issue. Because these items are used in meal time settings, eventually you will find one or two items that have absorbed a strong smell. The way to deal with this is to soak them overnight in a mixture composed of one tablespoon of dry mustard and four cups of water. The next morning, rinse them carefully and you should be fine.

So there are some pointers on caring for that glassware. The general idea is to be careful and soft with it. It should then give you pleasure for years to come.

Supplies needed:

Empty soup can

Hammer and nail

Remove the label off of the can and clean well. If the label on the can is difficult to remove, you can soak the can in warm soapy water and continue to remove the label. After the can is clean, fill it to the top with water and place in the freezer. When the water is frozen, use a hammer and a nail to pound holes into the can. The ice inside the can will help it hold its shape. Be creative with the design. Let the ice melt and place a small candle or tea light candle inside. These candle holders look pretty outside around the holiday season.
