Get A Good Night’s Sleep For A Better Life

What makes for a good night’s sleep? Leaving aside the psychological factors like stress, it really seems to boil down to the level of comfort your bed provides. The surface you sleep on needs to feel comfortable and you need to have covers that maintain the right body temperature. Other than that, what do you need?

Those basic ingredients aren’t hard to find, but if you want to get a great night’s sleep, things can get a bit more complicated. In fact, the options available are virtually limitless.

Let’s start from the ground up. A futon is the traditional form of Japanese bedding. While these mattresses are rather hard by our standards, they have the advantage of being flexible and so can serve several purposes. You can tuck them away in a closet and pull them out for overnight guests. If you live in a studio apartment, your futon can double as a couch during the day. You can have your futon on a low platform bed against the wall and use big bolster pillows for a backrest during the day.

Most of us prefer the traditional Western box spring and mattress set if we have the space. There are so many variations on these available that you can spend days trying them out before you decide on the one that is right for you.

When you start thinking about bed frames, you are getting into more subtle territory. Sleigh beds, for instance, won’t add or detract from the comfort level of your bed, but they do have their effect on the way you sleep. It’s easy to see how sleeping on a sleigh will be a very different experience from sleeping on a loft bed or a 4 poster. They all actually make a difference to how well you sleep at night.

Children love to sleep in lofts. Even after the novelty of sleeping in a twin loft bed after years of sleeping in a twin sleigh bed wears off, a child will still sleep differently in his loft bed and may even get a better night’s sleep.

A king sleigh bed in your main bedroom topped with a luxurious down quilt set turns your sleeping time into a a luxurious experience, even if you have an average mattress to sleep on. The mattress is secondary to the luxurious look of the bed and bedding.

If there is a point to all this musing on bedding, it is that there is more to sleeping well than just having a warm blanket and a soft bed. The bed itself seems to have a magical quality that can have an equally magical effect on your waking life.
